Threats to Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument

In May 2026, over 150 other scientists spoke out against attempts to overturn protections for Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument via the use of the Congressional Review Act (CRA). They call on Congress to oppose any attempt to overturn protections for the beloved science monument. Its stratigraphy, fossil record, ecological diversity, and cultural resources make it indispensable to scientific discovery and a testament to our shared history as a nation.
The letter states: “As scientists, researchers, and educators from across the United States, we write to reaffirm our deep concern regarding threats to the scientific integrity, management, and long-term protection of Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. Specifically, the Utah delegation’s reckless gambit to toss out the monument’s management plan using the Congressional Review Act risks not only the scientific objects of interest within the boundaries, but also the future of research and scientific discovery in this unique landscape.” |
Over 100 businessES call for a strong BLM public lands rule

We were proud to lead an effort, along with Conservation Alliance, in gathering over 100 businesses on a letter to the Bureau of Land Management encouraging the agency to adopt a strong Public Lands Rule.
Conserving public lands not only protects landscapes against the impacts of climate change, but also brings critical economic benefits through tourism and local recreation for rural and gateway communities situated near to these lands and waters. Outdoor recreation like hunting, fishing, boating, hiking, and wildlife watching supports 4.5 million jobs in the United States. Without balanced management that carefully considers conservation benefits, future development could endanger America’s public lands and waters and the millions of jobs they support.

At the start of the winter 2022 Outdoor Retailer Snow Show, a letter signed by over 80 Western outdoor businesses, was sent to the Biden administration asking the Department of Interior and Bureau of Land Management to include protections for more Bureau of Land Management (BLM) lands as a critical piece of accomplishing the America the Beautiful goals.
